The Character of God

Today, I am thankful to God simply because of who He is. The Bible attests to the fact that God is good, faithful, loving, and eternal; there is no beginning or end with the Lord. For those reasons (and scores of others), I am incredibly grateful:

I think that sometimes, as Christians, we take these attributes of God for granted. All you have to do is speak with somebody who subscribes to a different faith practice to appreciate the God of the Bible. Generally speaking, it seems like other faith traditions focus on a person’s effort to get to God (her works, deeds, and efforts at self-improvement); however, as Christ followers, we recognize that God is the One who actively pursues us. Further, we understand that there is nothing we could ever do to earn or merit His love and favor, based on our own endeavors. Such divine mercy and grace are gifts freely given; all we must do is believe and receive them from the Lord in faith.

This is what real love looks like, folks. As it says is 1 John 4:18 (AMP),

“We have come to know [by personal observation and experience], and have believed [with deep, consistent faith] the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides continually in him.”

Here is my prayer for today: Dear Lord, thanks for just being You! I am so grateful that Your character – Your love, faithfulness, goodness, wisdom, justice, and trustworthiness – never changes. Thanks for loving me enough to pursue me, and never giving up on me, even when I’ve doubted myself (or worse yet, when I’ve doubted You). Truly, Paul got it right in 1 Corinthians 13: Love is patient, love is kind. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.
