God used a good friend of mine this evening to remind me of important truth:
I need to guard my heart.
If I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve been guarding it enough. I need to be careful about who I allow into my circle of influence – not wary, but wise.
I’ve learned that sometimes God removes people from my life for this very reason. It’s not to say that these individuals are bad people – they’re not, generally speaking – however, they may not be good for me. In situations like these, I have to rely on God’s judgment, rather than trying to force the issue.
I think you can guard your heart with friends, coworkers, and even family members. It doesn’t mean that you wall off your heart from people; rather, you’re careful and attentive to the character and maturity of others (that’s what I discerned from my friend’s comments this evening, at any rate).
Here’s my prayer for today: Dear God, thank You for this important reminder to guard the most precious part of me – my heart. Help me to find that balance between being open and winsome, but also being wise and discerning with people. Remind me that guarding something simply indicates the value of the thing being protected, and I am valuable in Your eyes.
Let me see those around me through Your eyes, and give me a clear direction about how You’d like me to negotiate all of the relationships in my life. Thank You for speaking to me about this so clearly this evening! In Your name I pray, Amen.
